Moyes inspired by ‘serial winner’ Mourinho’s reaction to winning Conference League last season

By Nnamdi Onyeagwara

West Ham United manager David Moyes has revealed that Jose Mourinho’s reaction to winning the Europa Conference League last season has inspired him to achieve the same feat.

Mourinho won the first-ever Conference League with Roma last year in his debut season with the club, beating Feyenoord in the final, with the 60-year-old describing the victory as an “historic achievement.”

West Ham will face Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the semi-finals of the same competition, with the first leg taking place this Thursday.

Moyes is eager to repeat the Portuguese manager by winning the Conference League this season, an achievement that he believes could be the peak of his career.

He said: “To get to a European final, it could be my best one.

“In the past I’ve got to a Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United, lost on penalties in the quarter-final of the Europa League with Everton and last year we reached a semi-final (of the Europa League) here at West Ham.

“I want to try and take it a couple of steps further, and I would refer back to the serial winner Jose Mourinho – who found winning this trophy so special for him and his football club.”

The east London side are yet to lose in the competition this season, having won 11 of their 12 games, being held to a 1-1 draw with Gent on April 13.

AZ Alkmaar, who are fourth in the Eredivisie, eliminated Anderlecht and Lazio on their path to the semi-final.

West Ham, Fulham and Nottingham Forest contact club for signing – Brazilian on agenda

Nottingham Forest have joined West Ham United, Fulham and a few other clubs in the chase for São Paulo’s Pablo Maia.

On Wednesday, journalist André Hernan explained the Hammers and Marco Silva’s side looked at the 21-year-old in January. He had also stated the player could be moving to Europe in the summer, where he’s highly rated in the Premier League.

Bolavip Brasil relay Hernan’s claim and then provide their exclusive information about English interest in the midfielder. This is when West Ham, Fulham and Nottingham Forest are mentioned.

It’s claimed the two London clubs and the Tricky Trees have carried out polls recently. The Premier League trio seem to have made contact with the Brazilian club as the report’s title states they ‘knock on the door’ of São Paulo president Julio Casares for Maia.

São Paulo, for their part, ‘should negotiate’ the midfielder’s sale in the summer. They have already warned his suitors business can only be carried out for a fee of around R$60m [€11m].

The South American side have to raise funds and plan to achieve it by selling Maia and two other players.

Bolavip Brasil only explained that West Ham, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and others have contacted São Paulo, without specifying who is leading the transfer race.

Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Ham all keen on duo – Scouts watching every match

Crystal Palace, Leicester City and West Ham United are keeping close tabs on Valencia’s Yunus Musah and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

That’s according to ElDesmarque, who state several English clubs are regularly in attendance to watch their players.

Among them are Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Ham who don’t miss a chance to follow Musah and the 22-year-old Georgian in action for the La Liga side. It’s even claimed the trio ‘never miss’ monitoring the two players even for a week.

Both the American and the goalkeeper are among Los Ches’ most valuable players.

Valencia, for their part, could sell the duo as long as the ‘offer satisfies’ them. The Eagles, the Foxes and David Moyes’ side all have the economic potential to sign 20-year-old midfielder or Mamardashvili in the summer.

Musah’s contract lasts until 2026 and includes a €100m clause. Mamardashvili, on the other hand, has a deal expiring in 2027, with a €100m clause.

If any one or all the three Premier League sides want to sign Musah or the stopper, they will have to ‘sit down’ with Valencia to negotiate a deal.
